Thailand Makes Historic Move Towards same sex Marriage Equality

top-news

Thailand has taken a historic leap towards marriage equality as lawmakers passed legislation to recognize same-sex marriage, positioning the country to become Southeast Asia’s first to guarantee marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples. In a significant move, the 500-member House of Representatives approved the “marriage equality” bill, signaling a momentous shift in societal acceptance and legal recognition.

The legislation, which amends the Civil and Commercial Code, garnered overwhelming support with 400 lawmakers backing it after a rigorous three-hour debate. The bill’s passage in the House of Representatives now sets the stage for its review in the upper-house Senate on April 2, followed by endorsement by the King and publication in the Royal Gazette, after which it will take effect in 120 days.

Once enacted, Thailand will recognize same-sex marriage registrations, granting couples aged 18 and above rights to inheritance, tax benefits, child adoption, and more. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s administration has championed this cause, aiming not only to restore lost rights for LGBTQ individuals but also to enhance Thailand’s image as a welcoming LGBTQ-friendly destination.

“This legislation is about extending rights, not taking them away,” stated Danuphorn Punnakanta, leading the bill’s steering committee. The bill marks a significant departure from previous attempts, shifting from merely acknowledging civil partnerships to formally recognizing marriage between two individuals.

Thailand’s move echoes global strides towards equality, with Taiwan and Nepal already recognizing same-sex marriage. The country’s vibrant LGBTQ community has long advocated for these rights, facing legal obstacles until this landmark legislation. While challenges persist in other parts of Asia, Thailand’s progressive stance aims to set a new standard, potentially attracting LGBTQ tourism and fostering economic growth.

The passage of the marriage equality bill signifies just the beginning of Thailand’s progressive reforms, with plans for gender identity recognition and other inclusive measures on the horizon. As Thailand embraces diversity and inclusivity, it paves the way for a more equitable and accepting society, resonating with global calls for equality and human rights.
